Scott J. Holliday

Scott J. Holliday was born and raised in Detroit. In addition to a lifelong love of books and reading, he’s pursued a range of curiosities and interests, including glassblowing, boxing, and stand-up comedy. Guess which one hurt the most? His debut novel is Punishment followed by its sequel, Machine City. He’s currently trying to figure out cooking with cast iron while creating stories at home with his wife and two daughters.

In Scott’s words:

One time I was asked why I write.

I said, “I have to.”

“Why do you have to?”

I opened my mouth to answer, but nothing came out. It wasn’t until later—pumping gas on the way home, standing outside my car, freezing, no one else around—that I came up with some semblance of an answer.

Storytelling is lifeblood for me. I’m not sure what I’d do without it, but I know I wouldn’t be happy. The thrill of the new idea, the challenge of cultivating it into something good, and then something great, and then (hopefully) something amazing. It’s at once joyous and painful, triumphant and heartbreaking.

And it’s a painstaking craft. Don’t let anyone fool you on that. You think you’re done, but you’re not, then you think you are, but you’re not, and then again yes, and then again no… for years. And years. And years.

A good story, like a good anything takes time. It’s a universal law. I learned the hard way. All good writers do. No one just sits down and pounds out great stories from day one. You gotta hurt first. You gotta cry.

In the end, I believe stories are gifts we give each other, little instruction booklets that help us through our lives. I greatly cherish the stories I’ve received, and continue to receive, from excellent storytellers, past and present. I’m grateful to be able to give that gift to others through my own work, which I hope you enjoy; it’s the reason I write.
